Directly to the left, out of the frame, there was a media screen about twenty feet in height and at least eight feet wide. The screen was brightly illuminated, changing background colors from red to blue, to orange to purple. Turning it off, or covering it was not an option, so it was up to me to choose colors. Cortines School of the Performing Arts, this school was known as High School #9 when I photographed it for the architects. Coop Himmelb(l)au has since published a monograph by that name (High School #9) with many of my images included. Any survey of architecture or architectural photography in Los Angeles would be incomplete without photographs of this school. It is one of an ensemble of buildings on or near California Plaza designed by important international architects including the Los Angeles Cathedral, the Walt Disney Concert Hall, the Broad Museum of Contemporary Art, and the Museum of Contemporary Art. The original building was designed by a city engineer who had a vision for something modern and different than most city buildings. He built up berms on site, to create molds for the clam shell ribs visible in the original ceiling. Hodgetts + Fung added a dynamic catwalk and mechanicals structure supported by an arch spanning the entire stage. The also added a state of the art LED light system hidden in the metal “sails” visible along the right (rear) side of the house. This hydrology continues all the way to the I-110 overpass near downtown. This is the place where Los Angeles began. Sometimes, as is the case here, as many as eight or ten lights must be added just to brighten the exterior facades. Most of the time, existing exterior lighting is a problem, and must be eliminated in post, or the photograph must be made prior to the time when the lights are programmed to turn on. When the building is occupied, it is nearly impossible to arrange for the tenants to turn on their lights to illuminate the windows, because the management cannot insist on that (understandably), which means that the windows must be left dark, or they must be fixed in retouching. And the sheer amount of signage that must be retouched in post production is extreme. Most photographers use High Dynamic Range processing to deal with this situation, as I did. When I use HDR, I do not want it to show and I go to extremes to make sure that it doesn't. HDR is a tool used to keep detail in the extreme highlights while maintaining detail in the shadows. From here, freight and product containers are loaded onto trucks that will take goods to points north and east all the way to the Mississippi. They are poured on site with a licensing fee from the patent owner and then carried to sea on a massive floating crane for the construction of sea walls, coffer dams, and jetties. Terminal Island is man-made and receives only the freight for Los Angeles. A similar port is directly next door for Long Beach.. This is the study lounge designed by my client to serve specifically for group study and collaboration, something that was built into the program and requested by the client's client - the School for Communication and Journalism at U.S.C. in Los Angeles. The idea was to construct a situation that came as close as possible to the real thing. So I had to gather students who actually had work that would translate onto the white boards, and let them go to work while my assistants gathered photo releases and help me set up the shot. By the time I was ready, they were actually talking and working as though I had walked in and found them ready to shoot. No one seems to care. I was able to shoot freely and candidly there, something that can no longer happen in the U.S. unfortunately. This was the rare occasion I where could shoot children without asking them to pose - something that usually does not work out so well because it is like asking kids to become self conscious. What I do mind is an ostensibly educated reviewer giving short shrift to a serious piece of work, simply because she was looking for something funny and sexy and didn’t find it in this piece. Linear City, now in the collection of the Getty Research Institute at the Getty Center has risen up as a landmark work in Los Angeles urbanism through the efforts and critique of many others at the Los Angeles Center for Architecture and Urban Design, the Art Center College of Design, and the many colleagues at SCI-ARc who have supported this project. It was published in part in The Infrastructural City, a classic handbook on Los Angeles Urbanism at the turn of the century. No one has to like it but to dismiss this piece as unsexy and the L.A. What I do mind is an ostensibly educated reviewer giving short shrift to a serious piece of work, simply because she was looking for something funny and sexy and didn’t find it in this piece. Linear City, now in the collection of the Getty Research Institute at the Getty Center has risen up as a landmark work in Los Angeles urbanism through the efforts and critique of many others at the Los Angeles Center for Architecture and Urban Design, the Art Center College of Design, and the many colleagues at SCI-ARc who have supported this project. It was published in part in The Infrastructural City, a classic handbook on Los Angeles Urbanism at the turn of the century. No one has to like it but to dismiss this piece as unsexy and the L.A. I had the camera set up on a tripod on the roof of the building, and had gone to scout another location when I saw the sailboat coming. I had to run at full speed across the roof in order to arrive on time to capture this. Sometimes that's what it takes. At right is the wall of the chapel at the Providence Holy Cross Medical Center in the San Fernando Valley. I was upstairs photographing a hospital room when an assistant came to tell me the light in the chapel had finally arrived at the point I hoped it would. All photographers of architecture must go to great lengths in post-production to deal with the contrast ratio created by sunlight visible in a window, so the detail isn't lost. But this is not always the best choice to make. In this case, what was outside was a parking area and signage that I didn't want in this photograph. There were four in the building at the far end of the site, moving from one room to another to activate the motion sensors that turn on the lights. This was the only way to keep them on, as they are programmed in a way that is inaccessible to photographers. I was on a walkie directing, talking to the translator, who was talking on three different cell phones to his people in Arabic telling them which room to go to to activate the lights. My assistant was in the gym on a walkie with me coordinating the shots of the game action. I saw this scene as I walked by on my way to another shot setup, and I took advantage of an excellent opportunity. The glass windows somehow preserved a sense of candid privacy that allowed the kids to go on with what they were doing – something that probably would not have happened if I had been in the room with them. Posed photographs to show how a building is being used never work. Directly to the left, out of the frame, there was a media screen about twenty feet in height and at least eight feet wide. The screen was brightly illuminated, changing background colors from red to blue, to orange to purple. Turning it off, or covering it was not an option, so it was up to me to choose colors. There were four in the building at the far end of the site, moving from one room to another to activate the motion sensors that turn on the lights. This was the only way to keep them on, as they are programmed in a way that is inaccessible to photographers. I was on a walkie directing, talking to the translator, who was talking on three different cell phones to his people in Arabic telling them which room to go to to activate the lights. My assistant was in the gym on a walkie with me coordinating the shots of the game action. This image wasn’t planned or on the shot list. Architects who specialize in education and other institutional work usually want to show how their buildings are used and inhabited. I saw this scene as I walked by on my way to another shot setup, and I took advantage of an excellent opportunity. The glass windows somehow preserved a sense of candid privacy that allowed the kids to go on with what they were doing – something that probably would not have happened if I had been in the room with them. Posed photographs to show how a building is being used never work. Directly to the left, out of the frame, there was a media screen about twenty feet in height and at least eight feet wide. The screen was brightly illuminated, changing background colors from red to blue, to orange to purple. Turning it off, or covering it was not an option, so it was up to me to choose colors.
